The Sanskrit term for combustion is Astangata (अस्तांग).
Ast means to hide, Ang means body —
literally, "body hidden." When a planet comes too close to the Sun,
it becomes invisible in the sky, eclipsed by the Sun's brilliance,
much like stars disappear at sunrise.
The English word "combustion" is a mistranslation. A combust planet
is not burned — it is hidden. The Sun, being
a Sattva Guna planet, does not burn anything. It gives knowledge and
illumination. Only Mars (external, visible fire) and Ketu (internal,
invisible fire) can burn other planets. Combustion and burning are
entirely different concepts in Jyotish.
Hidden vs Lost
An astrologer must determine whether a combust planet is
chhipa (hidden) or lupt (lost).
If hidden, the planet's significations can be recovered through
appropriate remedies. If lost, no remedy will bring them back.
This distinction is the key to interpreting combustion correctly.
