Marana Karaka Sthana literally translates to "the place of
death for the significator." Sthana means place,
Marana means death — the process of dying, decaying, vanishing
from sight and memory. Karaka means significator.
When a planet occupies its MKS house, its significations become
extremely vulnerable — not simply weak, but in a state of dying.
A planet in MKS is like someone
who is drowning. When it is drowning, it clutches at another for help —
and any planet that conjoins or forms a yoga with the MKS planet
could also be pulled under, suffering similar problems.
Jupiter's Blessing
If the MKS planet is aspected by Jupiter (Jiva — the giver of life),
renewed life is granted. The planet is not really dying but recovering
from a death-like situation. This is considered the greatest blessing
that can come in any horoscope.
MKS House Placements
Each planet has a specific house where it enters its Marana Karaka Sthana:
| Planet | MKS House |
| Sun (Surya) | 12th house |
| Moon (Chandra) | 8th house |
| Mars (Mangal) | 7th house |
| Mercury (Budha) | 4th & 7th house |
| Jupiter (Guru) | 3rd house |
| Venus (Shukra) | 6th house |
| Saturn (Shani) | 1st house |
| Rahu | 9th house |
| Ketu | 4th house |
Not Everything Dies
A planet in MKS does not mean all its significations are destroyed.
The critical question is: which signification is decaying?
For example, the Sun in the 12th house — does the father die,
does the soul die, or is the native's self-authority diminished?
Mercury in the 4th house — is the person not working themselves,
or is the mother being affected, or are social norms being broken?
An astrologer must examine which specific aspect of the planet's
karakatwa is hit by the house placement.
The Drowning Effect
- • An MKS planet is like a drowning person — it clutches at any planet that conjoins it, potentially dragging that planet's significations down too.
- • Even an exalted planet conjoining an MKS planet can suffer. Example: exalted Mercury conjunct debilitated Venus in Virgo — Venus may get neecha bhanga, but Mercury, being in its MKS, drowns despite being exalted.
- • Jupiter's aspect is the antidote: it grants Jiva (life) to the dying planet, turning a curse into recovery.
