Introducing Jyotish Sources: A Free Library of Classical Astrology

A standalone resource for anyone studying Jyotish. Search across classical texts and explore translations, commentary, and source references. No account required.

Today we’re introducing Jyotish Sources, a free, searchable library of classical Vedic astrology. It brings passages, published translations, and commentary together in a resource for students, practitioners, and anyone curious about what the classical texts say.

The library stands on its own. You can use it without signing up for Vedic Astro Bot, entering birth details, purchasing a subscription, or requesting a reading. Open it whenever you want to study a topic or look up the source of a rule.

Start with what you want to understand. Search for “Saturn in the 7th house,” “wealth yoga,” or “atmakaraka” without knowing which book or verse to open. English and Sanskrit terms both work, and the “Read as” line shows how your words were interpreted.

At launch, the library brings together more than 2,500 searchable entries from three classical works:

  • Jaimini Sutras, with the English translation and notes by Bangalore Suryanarain Rao.
  • Phaladeepika, by Mantreswara, in the English translation by V. Subrahmanya Sastri.
  • Brihat Jataka, by Varahamihira, in the English translation by V. Subrahmanya Sastri.

Open a result to read its translation and commentary where available, and use its source reference to place the passage in context. Short summaries help you choose what to read; topic tags help you follow related ideas across the available books. You can explore how different texts approach the same question while keeping their sources distinct.

The library will continue to grow, bringing more classical texts and commentary within reach of anyone who wants to study Jyotish.

Whether you are checking a familiar rule, studying a new concept, or reading alongside a classical text, Jyotish Sources gives you a place to begin—and a source to follow.
